Bone Broth On The Carnivore Diet: Tips & Recipes

Bone Broth On The Carnivore Diet: Tips & Recipes

You may have heard about bone broth when starting your carnivore journey, but never tried it. Many newcomers to the carnivore diet don’t know how to make or use it. But bone broth is very easy to prepare at home, and is much more versatile than you may think.

With these bone broth recipes and tips, you’ll add flavor to your meals and enjoy extra nutritional benefits.

What Is Bone Broth?

If you’re just getting started on the carnivore diet, you may be unfamiliar with bone broth and its benefits. So, before we discuss how to include bone broth in the carnivore diet, let’s look at what it is.

Bone broth is a liquid produced by simmering bones rich in bone marrow and connective tissue in water for a long time. We’re talking at least twelve hours, and often much longer. While the bones are simmering, nutrients escape from them and are released into the water.

The most important factor is the cooking time duration. This is what allows the maximum nutrients to enter the water.

Some people add vinegar to leach out the minerals, but this has proven to be an unnecessary step. Whether you use a couple of tablespoons of vinegar or not, you will still get all the health benefits of bone broth.

Is Bone Broth The Same Thing As Meat Stock?

Bone broth is often confused with meat stock, but they are not the same thing.

Although similar, meat stock has a shorter preparation time and includes meaty bones. It may also contain aromatics such as vegetables and herbs for extra flavor. While it is also healthy, meat stock does not offer nearly as many nutritional benefits as bone broth does.

Bone broth is a staple in the carnivore diet, and is also keto and paleo-friendly. It is the ultimate carnivore beverage and can be used as an alternative to coffee and tea. It’s a versatile ingredient in cooking. And even better news is that it offers many health benefits.

Health Benefits Of Bone Broth On The Carnivore Diet

Here are some of the benefits to incorporating bone broth into your carnivore diet:

  • Packed full of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids

  • A healthy dose of collagen for the skin and joints

  • Supports digestive health

  • Provides hydration and supports electrolyte balance

Tips For Incorporating Bone Broth Into Your Diet

Need some tips for incorporating bone broth into your carnivore diet? Here are our top five.

1. Start Your Day With A Warm Cup

Are you unsure of what to use as a substitute for coffee on the carnivore diet? Bone broth is an excellent alternative to hot beverages like coffee and tea on cold winter mornings. That’s why one of the best ways to incorporate bone broth into the carnivore diet is to start your day with a warm cupful.

2. Make Bone Broth Gels

Some bone broths tend to ‘gel’ more easily than others. If you want to make bone broth that gels, you need to use only enough water to cover the bones, or roughly 1 quart of water to 1 quart of bones. If you use more water, your bone broth will have a thinner consistency.

A gelatinous bone broth is also more likely when you use more collagen-rich bones and animal parts. And keep an eye on the cooking time. If you prefer, you can also add powdered gelatin to your broth for a savory gel to use in meals.

3. Use It As A Base For Meaty Soups

Did you know that you can enjoy tasty soups on the carnivore diet? Yes, there are many delicious carnivore diet recipes you can enjoy, including soups. And this is the perfect way to introduce bone broth into your diet.

Use bone broth as a base for all of your meaty soups and other hearty winter meals. It adds even more nourishment to those warm comfort meals we all love.

4. Cook Your Meats In Bone Broth

We understand that soups are not always appealing in the heat of summer. But there are other ways to use bone broth besides soups. You can cook your meats in bone broth for that dose of extra flavor and nutrition.

Cooking meat in bone broth instead of ordinary water adds a depth of flavor and a ton of extra nutrients to any meal.

5. Use It In Place Of Water For Cooking

Strict carnivore is the most restrictive form of the carnivore diet and is designed to be temporary. Are you transitioning from strict carnivore to a more relaxed diet at the moment? You can continue to use bone broth in your meal plans.

Simply replace your cooking water with it. This way, you’ll continue to enjoy some of the benefits of bone broth, no matter what you’re eating.

Carnivore Diet Bone Broth Recipes

Before we get to the bone broth recipes, keep these cooking tips in mind:

1. Ensure you use enough water to cover the bones. The general bone-to-water ratio is 1:2, but depending on what bones you use, you may need to use less or more water. As the bones simmer for hours, some water will be lost to evaporation.  In time, you’ll find what works best for you.

 2. Cook bones for at least 12 hours, but for even better results, leave to simmer for up to 24-48 hours. Chicken bone broth will be ready sooner than beef or pork bone broth. You may also use a mixture of different animal bones, to maximize the benefits.

 3. You can adapt your bone broth recipe according to what you'll be using the bone broth for. So, reduce the amount of water to make it denser for a bone broth to use in soups. Or increase the amount of water to dilute it if you want to use the bone broth as a lighter beverage.

The best thing about bone broth is that it’s so easy to prepare. Anyone can do it! You don’t need a fancy carnivore cookbook to enjoy bone broth on the carnivore diet. All you need to get started are these simple recipes.

1. Beef Bone Broth

Beef is one of the most popular carnivore foods.

You can put all those leftover beef bones to good use, by making a beef bone broth. Beef bone broth contains a wide variety of nutrients and up to 19 amino acids, both essential and non-essential. Here’s how to make beef bone broth at home.

You’ll need:

  • A mixture of beef bones, such as knuckle and marrow bones, neck, shank, and oxtails

  • Salt (optional)

  • Water

Place ingredients in a stock pot, bring to a boil, then allow to simmer for 12 hours or more. If you’re using a slow cooker, allow up to 18 hours.

2. Chicken Bone Broth

If all you have are chicken bones, don’t worry, you can use them to make bone broth, too!

Chicken bone broth is high in omega-6 and cooks a bit faster than beef bone broth. However, because chicken bones are not as dense, it is not the best broth for collagen content. That aside, both beef and chicken bone broth offer the nutrients you need to be strong and healthy. This is how to make it.

You’ll need:

  • A variety of chicken bones, for example, whole chicken carcasses, including feet, necks, wings, and leftover bones from your meals

  • Salt (optional)

  • Water

Place in a stock pot, bring to a boil, then allow to simmer for about 3 hours. If you’re using a slow cooker, allow up to 12 hours.

3. Pork Bone Broth

Pork is another popular carnivore diet meat.

Unless you have an allergy to it, or abstain for religious or cultural reasons, pork makes a wonderful addition to the carnivore diet. Our delicious pork chops recipe will have your mouth watering. And you can also use pork bones to make a delicious pork bone broth. Here’s how you make it.

You’ll need:

  • A variety of pork bones (if you’d like to boost the gelatin content, include pig trotters)

  • Salt (optional)

  • Water

Place in a stock pot, bring to a boil, then allow to simmer for 6 hours or more. If you’re using a slow cooker, allow up to 18 hours.

Wrapping Up

If you want to add flavor, nutrition, and above all, versatility to your carnivore diet meals, use bone broth.

With minimal effort, you can make your own bone broth at home. And there are many ways to use carnivore diet bone broth. Use it on its own as a nourishing hot beverage or as a base for soups or your other favorite meals. All it takes is these simple carnivore diet bone broth recipes and a little imagination.
